This is an interesting webinar that I attended that talks about a strategy for using LinkedIn to promote and expand your business. Ignore the sales pitch at the end…. I haven’t had the chance to edit it out of the video, but I wanted to share the ideas. I have not tested the strategy much yet, but I still think it is worth passing on if for no other reason than that the tips for how to set up your profile are very valuable on their own.

Summary:
Linked in is one of the few social networking sites that allows you to easily see who has viewed your profile. You use this along with strategic profile management to make yourself stand out and promote your product or service.

Goals

  • Be found by people on linked in
  • Be contacted by people on linkedin
  • Convert these people into sales/business

Steps

  1. Use a compelling picture that instantly shows your credibility. This demonstrates authority. Add the logos associated to any media coverage or exposure you have had.
    • Stand out from other results
    • Position yourself as an authority with media credibility
    • Communicate a level of trust
  2. Create a compelling headline that includes your website URL
    Use “keywords” related to what you do. If you are a model coach, include the terms “models”, “model coaching”, “runway”, ect.
  3. Use the “positions” and “experience” to provide more useful
  4. promotional info and URLs
    You can make your “positions” go to your Facebook page or another link you want to promote. They don’t necessarily have to be jobs.

  5. Put your “sales pitch” in the summary
    • Offers a solution to your client’s problem
    • Compels the reader to say “I want that”
    • Explains how you do it better than your competitors
    • Use emotional words in your summary. Show potential clients that you understand their problems and goals: frustration, fear, helpless, fun, proud, satisfied
    • Avoid overused buzzwords. They dilute your credibility and no one wants to hear you talk about yourself. : responsible, strategic, creative, effective, patient, expert, organizational, driven, innovative, analytical
    • Make sure that you include a “call to action”
      “Call me now at [phone number] so I can help you with…”, “Go to [my website]” for more information and [benefit], “Connect with me on LinkedIn to join my network of…”, “Like my Facebook page to stay in touch and [benefit]”

Additional ways to attract people

  1. Check to see who has looked at your profile and contact them through linkedin

  2. Look at the profiles of people you want to attract. Look at 100 profiles per week/day. The idea is they will see that you looked at their profile and will look at yours. Look at the profiles of people in your target industries.
  3. Try to connect with influential people. Add them to your network.
